Colombo: The People’s Power National Party (PNP), led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake, won an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections. Previously, according to preliminary results published until 11:00 p.m. local time, the PNP had obtained 70 percent of the votes. The main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the National Democratic Front (NDF), backed by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, respectively won 11 and 5 percent of the votes. The NPP won a decisive victory in Galle, the capital of the southern province, with more than 70 percent of the vote.

Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million and more than 17 million voters. Parliamentary elections are held for a period of five years. About 65 percent of the voting was held in Sri Lanka on Thursday and now the results have also been made public. The Parliament of Sri Lanka has 225 seats and to obtain the majority it is necessary to obtain 113 seats. Two months ago, in September, the presidential elections were held here.
