Bibek Debroy, the country’s well-known economist and chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, has died at the age of 69. Recognized for his significant contribution to the Indian economy, Debroy played a key role in shaping the country’s economic policies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Debroy’s demise in a social media post. Prime Minister Modi said, ‘I have known Dr. Debroy for many years. I will always remember his ideas and his passion for academic debate. Sad for his passing. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Prime Minister Modi further said, ‘Dr. Bibek Debroy was a great scholar. He was well versed in economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and many other fields. Through his works he has left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of India. In addition to his contributions to public policy, he loved working on our ancient texts and making them accessible to young people.’
