On Saturday, an official of the Election Commission’s Static Surveillance Team (SST) said they had seized gold, diamond and silver jewelery worth Rs 24 crore from a toll booth in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. The Election Commission had deployed its SST team keeping in mind the elections to be held in Maharashtra.

A Static Surveillance Team (SST) official said they had seized gold, diamond and silver jewelery worth Rs 24 million from Supa Toll Plaza in Ahilyanagar on the morning of Thursday, October 31. Inspector Arun Awadh of Supa police station said, “Three people have been caught carrying gold, diamond and silver jewelery in a vehicle. The three started their journey from Zaveri Bazaar in south Mumbai.

The official said that the SST team of the Election Commission asked him for the receipt of so many jewels that he had shown, but the money written on it did not match the value of so many jewels. Following this, the team confiscated all the jewelery and reported the matter to the Income Tax Department.

Police said that the three accused were asked to hand over all these jewelery in different districts of Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar and Jalgaon. Earlier, the SST team along with police had also seized foreign currency notes worth Rs 10.8 million from a vehicle on Marine Drive on Thursday.

Talking about elections in Maharashtra, on November 20 (Wednesday) the Election Commission announced elections across Maharashtra, after which the election results will be declared on November 23.
