This is how AMU was financed

Aligarh Muslim University, this is a name that has had its own identity in the field of education for almost 150 years. Recently, the Supreme Court has confirmed its status as a minority institution. But do you know that when Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was raising funds to establish this university, he took money from the royal houses of Banaras and Patiala and from the houses of the courtesans? Do you know how much money was spent building this university?

Aligarh Muslim University was established as a university in 1875 and did not take its present form until 1920. For this, the then government passed an Aligarh Muslim University Act. Today, it is a central government funded university, spread over 467.6 hectares in Aligarh city of Uttar Pradesh.

The money passed from the courtesans to the royal families.

When Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was raising funds for the Aligarh Muslim University, he contacted Thomas Baring, the then Governor General of India. At that time, Thomas Baring donated 10,000 rupees to him. The names of Maharaja Mahindra Singh Saheb Bahadur of Patiala and Raja Shambhu Narayan of Banaras are among those who donated for this university.

There are many stories that Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had even accepted donations from courtesans for this university. When some parties expressed displeasure over this, they attempted to reduce opposition by asking him to build a toilet at the university instead of returning the money. Not only this, but he raised money for it through street meetings and also traveling around the country.

Nizam’s donation helped a lot.

For the establishment of this university, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan received Rs 60,000 from the royal family of Banaras and Rs 58,000 from Patiala. The greatest help was given by the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad. According to media reports, his donation of approximately Rs 5 lakh helped a lot in the construction of the university.

Apart from this, thousands of people donated small amounts like 25 rupees and established this university. Not only this, it was decided to write the names of those who donated more than Rs 500 in the Central Hall.
