While there are many restrictions on women’s clothing in Iran, women’s protests against it are occasionally seen in the country. On Saturday, October 2, a student at a university in Tehran was seen taking off her clothes and wandering openly around the campus. The student’s video quickly went viral on social media and people reacted tremendously. Why did this student doing research at the university take off her clothes and continue walking around in her underwear? Why did he do this? There is a great debate about this. Some people say she has done this in “forced protest against hijab rules”, while others say her mental condition is not adequate.
Why did the student take off her clothes?
He was arrested after a girl was seen in her underwear on the university’s Science and Research campus. People who support this student believe that she has “protested against the forced imposition of the hijab” by taking off her clothes and walking around wearing only underwear. Some have also called this step by the student revolutionary. While taking off her clothes, this student had told other students, “I have come to save you all.” After the incident, university authorities detained the student and sent her to a mental health hospital.
It was also said in some media reports that the moral police misbehaved with the girl, in protest so she took this action. Some people say that this act by the student will be a historic step in the fight for the freedom of Iranian women. This has happened in a country where women are killed for even showing their hair.
Accusations against the student: she was under mental pressure
According to the Iranian government agency IRNA, the Director General of Public Relations of the Islamic Azad University, Aamir Mahjoub, reacted to the incident on his X account on Sunday and stated that the student had committed an immoral act on November 2. Mahjoub said that after an indecent act by a student from the university’s science and research branch, campus security took action and handed her over to authorities. He said investigation revealed that the student was under mental pressure.
Growing protests in Iran
Let us tell you that opposition to the dress code by women has increased in Iran in recent years. The wearing of the hijab became mandatory for women in Iran after the 1979 revolution. These restrictions gave rise to several movements of activists and ordinary citizens who question the mandatory nature of the hijab. The death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman, in the custody of the morality police in September 2022, sparked massive protests against the hijab ban across the country, which were strongly repressed by the government.
