Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ceasefire with Lebanon. The Israeli military imposed a curfew on people’s movements in southern Lebanon after dark on Wednesday, hours after the ceasefire with Hezbollah came into effect.
Military spokesman Avichai Adrai said in a Twitter post that residents would be prohibited from traveling south of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border, between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. Thursday. He said the army ordered the villages to be evacuated.
Israel launched massive attack on Beirut
Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ceasefire with Lebanon on Tuesday. The ceasefire was due to go into effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday, but Netanyahu launched a massive attack on Beirut before that. In addition, Israel also imposed a curfew in southern Lebanon.
A ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hezbollah on Wednesday after an agreement between both sides brokered by the United States and France, but Israel warned local residents not to return to the border area yet or approach its troops.
What are the terms of the ceasefire?
Under the terms of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, Israeli forces can remain in Lebanon for 60 days. Regarding the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the army not to allow residents to return to villages near the border after four Hezbollah activists were detained in the area. The Lebanese army urged returning residents not to go to areas where Israeli forces were present for their own safety.
Hezbollah had been helping Hamas in the war for the past year, so its enmity with Israel had also increased. Many people have died so far in this war that has been going on between these two for the last year. Lebanon says at least 3,768 people have been killed in the war, most of whom died in the last two months. On the other hand, Israel claims that so far 82 soldiers and 47 civilians have been killed in the Hezbollah attack.
