Senior IAS officer K. Sanjay Murthy has been appointed as the country’s next Comptroller and Auditor General. He has been appointed in place of the current CAG Girish Chandra Murmu, who will retire on November 20. In the notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, it is said that on the basis of the power conferred by sub-section (1) of Article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed K. Sanjay Murthy has been appointed Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a position which will take effect from the date of his assumption. De. Sanjay Murthy is a 1989 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre and is currently working as Secretary, Department of Higher Education under the Union Ministry of Education. While in this position, he played an important role in shaping policies related to higher education.
His efforts focused on implementing government regulations and promoting collaboration with educational institutions to improve educational development throughout the country. Murthy will replace Girish Chandra Murmu, who took over as CAG in August 2020. Murmu had earlier served as the first lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir after it became a Union Territory.

The job of the Comptroller and Auditor General i.e. CAG is to audit all the departments of the State and Union Governments including Indian Railways, Defence, Posts and Telecommunication. CAG also has the right to examine the expenditure accounts of the Government of India. In addition to this, CAG has the power to audit more than 1500 public commercial undertakings, more than 400 non-commercial autonomous bodies and various bodies and authorities funded by Union government bodies and local bodies, Panchayati Raj institutions.
CAG also has the power to investigate all transactions, inspect records and ask questions to the executive. The CAG has authority through Article 149 of the Constitution. Further, the CAG is assisted by the Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IA&AD) in discharging its constitutional function.
