West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday termed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced by the central government as anti-secular. He said this will take away the rights of Muslims. In her statement to the Assembly, Mamata Banerjee alleged that the central government brought this bill without consulting the states on the issue, which is against the federal structure and the principles of secularism.
The Chief Minister said, “This bill is a deliberate attempt to defame a particular section. This will attack the religious and social rights of Muslims. The Center did not consult us on this. If any religion is attacked, I will fully support it. “I will oppose and condemn it.”
Opposition parties against the bill
Opposition parties have also heavily criticized this bill. It says that the amendments introduced in the Waqf Law violate the religious rights of Muslims and are considered contrary to secularism. On the other hand, the ruling BJP has supported this bill, saying that through it transparency will be achieved in the functioning of the Waqf Board and accountability will be ensured for better management of Waqf properties. The central government has constituted a parliamentary committee to probe the controversial Waqf bill.
What is this bill?
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a legislative proposal introduced in 2024 that aims to reform and bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf Board. Waqf Board, which manages the religious properties of the Indian Muslim community. Some amendments have been proposed through this bill.
The Lok Sabha on Thursday approved the extension of the mandate of the Joint Committee of Parliament considering the Waqf (Amendment) Bill until the last day of the budget session next year. Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal moved a proposal in the House to extend the time for submission of the Joint Committee of Parliament report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill till the last day of the 2025 budget session, which It was approved by oral vote.
