The Maharashtra government has reinstated IPS officer Rashmi Shukla as the state director general of police (DGP) and head of the police force after the conclusion of the assembly elections. A day after DGP Rashmi Shukla was removed on the directions of the Election Commission of India ahead of the assembly elections, senior IPS officer Sanjay Kumar Verma took charge as the Maharashtra DGP.

Rashmi Shukla was removed from her post following the demand of Maharashtra Congress Unit chief Nana Patole. Sanjay Verma would hold the top post till the election process is over, while by previous government order, Rashmi Shukla was sent on compulsory leave for the same period.

However, the Home Department order said that with the completion of the electoral process and declaration of election results on Sunday, the Election Commission of India on Monday officially declared that the Model Code of Conduct had ended. As a result, the government terminated Rashmi Shukla’s leave and ordered her to resume her role as DGP, and Sanjay Verma handed over the charge. The official government order detailing this change has been digitally signed and published on the official website of the Government of Maharashtra.
