Israel attacked Lebanon. (symbolic)
The Israeli airstrike targeted a densely populated residential area in the Lebanese capital on Monday night. The area of Beirut that was targeted is close to the United Nations office, the Parliament building, the Prime Minister’s office and several embassies. A building hit by an IDF airstrike in central Beirut was identified as the headquarters of Hezbollah. Although there is no information about any senior officials being attacked, it is possible that members of the organization were killed in the attack.
Lebanon’s official national news agency said two missiles had landed in the Jouk al-Blatt area of Beirut. This attack occurred at a time when news has come that the US envoy has postponed his trip for ceasefire talks. Ambulance sirens blared throughout the area following the attacks, but no official casualty figures have been released. According to the news agency, there have been a large number of victims on the road. The target of the airstrike is still unclear. The Israeli military had not issued any warning before the attack.
Hezbollah’s main spokesman dies
The main spokesman for the extremist organization Hezbollah was killed in an Israeli attack in central Beirut. On Sunday, the first Israeli airstrike took place in central Beirut in more than a month. The official said Hezbollah’s main spokesman, Mohammad Afif, was killed in the attack.
Israeli air force bombed Beirut
After Israel’s military crackdown intensified in September and the assassination of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Afif defended his organization in the media. Earlier, Israeli warplanes had bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut. The army had warned the population to evacuate many buildings. The Hezbollah terrorist group has a strong presence in the region and the attacks come at a time when Lebanese officials are considering a US-brokered ceasefire proposal.
Attack on Netanyahu’s private residence
Also on Sunday, Israeli police said they had arrested three suspects after projectiles were fired at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence in the coastal city of Caesarea. Authorities said two projectiles were fired in the evening when Netanyahu and his family were not at their residence and there were no casualties. Last month, Hezbollah also attacked the residence with a drone, even as Netanyahu and his family were outside the house.
