The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made a big announcement. The England Cricket Board has decided to name the bilateral Test series being played between England and New Zealand after former England batsman Graham Thorpe. Graham Thorpe recently passed away. According to The Telegraph (UK), this trophy is being designed in New Zealand and will be named after two of the best players in both countries, Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. The trophy will be unveiled before the start of the upcoming three-match Test series between New Zealand and England.
Played 100 Test matches for England
Graham Thorpe committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on August 4. This news caused a wave of mourning throughout the cricket world. Thorpe played 100 Test matches for England and was counted among the great cricketers of his time. This left-handed player scored 6744 runs at an average of 44.66. During this period, he scored 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries. He made his Test debut at Trent Bridge, Nottingham during the 1993 Ashes and played his final Test match against Bangladesh at Chester-le-Street in June 2005.
Thorpe also played 82 ODI matches for England, scoring 2380 runs at an average of 37.18. He also scored 21 half-centuries. His ODI debut was on May 19, 1993 against Australia in Manchester. He played his last ODI for England on 2 July 2002 against Sri Lanka at Leeds.
The England cricket team will tour New Zealand for a Test series later this month. This 3-match Test series will begin on November 28 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The second Test will be played in Wellington, while the third and final Test match will be played in Hamilton. From a World Test Championship point of view, this series will be very important for both teams.
