In fact, during the hearing held by NGT on Monday in Varanasi on the tributaries of the Ganges, Varuna and Assi, while making oral comments, Varanasi district magistrate S. Raj Lingam was asked whether the water of the Ganges can be drunk. Ganges in Varanasi? The district magistrate had no answer to this question. In such a situation, Akhilesh Yadav mocked the BJP regarding the difficult issues of NGT and alleged that in the last 10 years, billions of rupees were taken out to clean the Ganga, but it did not reach the Ganga Ghats.

On Monday, on the orders of NGT, the district magistrate of Varanasi was also present during the virtual hearing on the Ganga, Varuna and Assi tributaries. During the hearing, the NGT made strong verbal comments on cleaning the Ganga, including encroachment on tributaries. According to advocate Saurabh Tiwari, NGT first asked the DM what work had been done to clean the Ganga during his two years in office and also asked him if he (DM) could drink Ganga water in Varanasi. If not, then why were no signs put up on the ghats of Varanasi stating that Ganga water is not suitable for drinking (Aachman) or bathing? The lawyer said that the district magistrate also made him look helpless in these questions and talked about following the government’s orders, but the NGT said that the DM has the power, he should work on it and not remain helpless. The next hearing in this case has been set for December 13.

On Tuesday, Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP over the comments made by NGT on cleaning the Ganga. He wrote on social media: “Do not fulfill the promises of those who lied to Mother Ganges. In the name of ‘Namami Gange’ and ‘Clean Ganga’, funds worth billions of rupees were withdrawn in the last 10 years under the BJP government, but those funds did not reach the ghats of Mother Ganga. The truth of the claims in the archives about Ganga ji being clean, unbroken and pure is that in Varanasi, Mother Ganga has become so polluted that not to mention drinking water, this water is not even suitable for bathing. In this context, the National Green Tribunal has made the whole truth clear by asking the district magistrate of ‘Varanasi’, the main parliamentary constituency of the country: ‘Can you drink Ganga water?’ Furthermore, this advice from the National Green Tribunal is also tantamount to drowning in water the double-engine government that during its government the DM of the so-called Kyoto i.e. Kashi should use his power to put up a warning sign on the banks of the Ganges that “This water of the Ganges is not suitable for drinking or bathing.” Condemnable and shameful too! Kashi says today that the BJP is not necessary.”
It is noteworthy that in Varanasi, the Varuna and Assi river, a tributary of the Ganges, is on the verge of losing its existence due to encroachment and is currently left only as a drain. Governments have spent billions of rupees to clean the Ganga, but the condition of the Ganga remains the same as before. Most of the devotees have started avoiding bathing with Ganga water, then after getting information about the condition of Ganga water through NGT oral commentary, people are quite disappointed.
