No recognition, appointment only for work… MEA clarification on the appointment of an Afghan diplomat

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

An Afghan news agency on Wednesday claimed that India had appointed an Afghan diplomat to the Consulate General in Mumbai. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that an Afghan student has been appointed to run the embassy. The government has not granted him diplomatic status.

After the arrival of the Taliban in Afghanistan, many employees who worked at the embassy here left the country and went to Western countries. But there is a large Afghan population living in India, which is facing difficulties in services due to staff shortages at the embassy.

Refusal to appoint diplomat

Giving information on this issue, the Ministry of External Affairs said that in the last three years, many Afghan diplomats posted at the Afghan Embassy and Consulates in India left India seeking asylum in Western countries. Due to this, there is only one diplomat working in the embassy located in the country.

In this situation, the government has assigned an Afghan student to take charge of the work at the Mumbai embassy. However, the ministry clarified that the student was appointed only to deal with the work and was not granted diplomatic status.

The Taliban are not recognized

On the issue of recognition of the current Taliban government in Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry said that there is a process to recognize any government. India will follow the international community’s decision to recognize the Taliban.

India has not yet recognized the Taliban, but several meetings have been held with the Taliban at a representative level. That same month, India’s Joint Secretary for Afghan Affairs, JP Singh, met Afghanistan’s acting Defense Minister, Mullah Yakub.
