The University Grants Commission (UGC) plans to make degrees more flexible starting from the next academic session (2025-26). Through this, the Commission aims to help students complete the course at their own pace and obtain the degree. UGC president M Jagadish Kumar said that through this, students can complete the syllabus in a shorter period.
UGC president M Jagadish Kumar has announced that students will have the option to complete the three-year degree in two and a half years and the four-year degree in three years. Also, students who want to complete their studies at a slow pace. Now they too will be able to complete the 3-year course in four years. Additionally, if a student needs a break, they can drop the course mid-course and return to it later.
Students can complete the study program in less time.
The UGC approved the recommendations of the committee headed by V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras. Jagdish Kumar said detailed guidelines will be issued soon. The UGC president said that with a four-year degree, students will have the opportunity to carry out research work, apply for patents and publish research articles. This will be implemented across the country under the National Education Policy 2020.
According to TOI, UGC president M. Jagadish Kumar made this statement on the sidelines of a students’ conference in Chennai on Thursday. He said: “Students who are capable will be able to complete the curriculum in a shorter period of time in the coming years.” We hope you can have a time of 6 months to a year. The recommendations of the committee headed by Kamakoti were approved on November 13.

UGC president M. Jagadish Kumar also said that despite choosing a slow-paced course, a student can take a break from the course if he wishes. You can also come back and complete it later as the course has multiple entry and exit points. The committee headed by IIT Madras director V Kamakoti had submitted suggestions to the UGC on fast-paced and slow-paced degrees.
