During this, Prime Minister Modi met heads of state of many countries, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Brazil from Nigeria
The Prime Minister arrived in Brazil for the summit in the second phase of his three-nation tour. Prime Minister Modi is on a five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana from November 16 to 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Monday after his visit to Nigeria. Upon arriving in Rio de Janeiro, the Indian community welcomed him warmly with songs in Sanskrit. This is Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to Brazil after the BRICS summits in 2014 and 2019. Last year, India hosted the G20 summit in New Delhi.
‘Brazil drove Delhi’s decisions’
Addressing the G20, Prime Minister Modi said, ‘The decisions taken at the G20 summit in New Delhi were implemented during Brazil’s presidency. It is a matter of great satisfaction that we have given priority to the SDG objectives. We focus on inclusive growth, women-led development and youth power. It is clear that One Earth, One Family, One Future is as relevant at this summit as it was last year.
He said: ‘In the last 10 years we have lifted 25 million people out of poverty. More than 80 million people receive free cereals. 5.5 million people benefit from the largest health insurance plan in the world. Now, 6 million people over 70 years of age will also be able to benefit from free health insurance. Maintaining its focus on women-led development and social inclusion, more than 30 million women microentrepreneurs have been linked to banks and provided access to credit. India is also contributing to global food security. We have recently provided humanitarian assistance to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Prime Minister Modi said: “We support Brazil’s initiative for a ‘Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty’.” This is an important step towards the implementation of the Deccan High Level Principles for Food Security adopted at the New Delhi Summit.
What is the G20?
The G20 is an international forum that includes 19 countries and members of the European Union (EU). Its purpose is to discuss and cooperate on the global economy, financial stability, climate change and other important global issues. The G20 is a group of the world’s major economies and plays an important role in global policymaking.
The G20 was formed in 1999 and its main objective was to manage global financial crises and promote economic growth. This conference is held every year and brings together the heads of member states (prime ministers, presidents or their representatives) to discuss global issues. The influence and importance of the G20 is also due to the fact that its member countries represent around 85% of the world’s total GDP and around 75% of global trade.
