Chandīgarh: Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal was allegedly forcibly removed from the Khanauri border on Tuesday, even before fasting to death, and taken to Ludhiana hospital for examination. The farmers claimed that the police took away Dallewal, 70, as if he were a gangster or a terrorist.

Dallewal had announced a fast

The action by the Punjab Police comes after Dallewal called for starting a fast unto death on Tuesday demanding a legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for crops. He also said that he is ready to sacrifice his life to meet the demands of farmers.

Sarwan Singh Pandher got angry with the police

Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher alleged that Dallewal was forcibly detained by the police at the Khanauri border early on Tuesday because he had criticized the Bhagwant Mann government over the police action. Meanwhile, the farmers carried out their program and said that instead of Dallewal, farmer leader Sukhjit Singh Hardojhande will fast unto death. Terming it a decisive battle, he asked the Center to resume talks with them in the next 10 days to resolve their issues.

Addressing the media at the Khanauri border, Pandher criticized Mann over the action of the Punjab Police and said this was the same Chief Minister who claimed that he was with the farmers and fighting against the Center as their defender. He asked the Chief Minister why the Punjab Government had taken such a decision. Referring to Dallewal, he said our problems are related to the central government. Why did the Punjab government take such a decision? They took away our elder and high-ranking farmer leader after misbehaving.

The police gave this information.

A senior Punjab Police official said Dallewal was taken to the private Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC) in Ludhiana. Deputy Inspector General of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the administration was concerned about Dallewal’s age and health in view of the call to fast unto death. Sidhu said that considering his health and age, the administration has decided that a proper medical examination is necessary. We are going to get him medically examined at DMC, Ludhiana.
