The Lancet, an organization that works on human health and climate change in the world, had published a report on India stating that the number of people dying from pollution in India is much higher than figures from the World Health Organization. In this regard, the Government of India had set up a research body headed by the Central Pollution Control Board. Now this research agency, while submitting its report, rejected Lancet’s claims and called them misleading.
Submitting its report to the National Green Tribunal, CPCB said there are many technical flaws in the Lancet report and questions have been raised over its credibility. CPCB alleged that Lancet wants to tarnish India’s image by submitting such reports, so that India’s efforts to address climate change and pollution may be undermined.
What is the Lancet report?
Lancet stated in its report that poor air quality in ten major cities in India has a serious impact on people’s health and mortality rate. The report also says that the number of deaths due to air pollution is much higher than the World Health Organization figures.
what does cse say
Sunita Narayan, director of the Center for Science and Environment, the country’s main organisation, also raised doubts about the Lancet’s claims. He said that no one knows the methods used in this study and that it is difficult to say anything about it.
However, he also said that the data on deaths due to air pollution in the country should be clearly recorded on the death certificate, so that it can be known whether the death is due to air pollution or some other reason. Sunita Narayan said that air pollution causes diseases and has a negative impact on health and sometimes also causes death.
