Pope Francis said he is praying for the 14 people who died and several others were injured when the roof of a railway station in northern Serbia collapsed on Friday, November 1. “I send you, Your Excellency, and your fellow citizens, my deepest condolences and the assurance of my spiritual closeness following the recent incident at the Novi Sad train station,” the Pope wrote. “At this difficult time for the country, I pray especially for those who have been killed, their grieving families and the injured.”

The Pope prayed for the blessings of Almighty God for healing, consolation and peace for all those affected by the tragedy.

More than thirty people were injured, three of them seriously, when the station’s roof collapsed. Thousands of Serbs demonstrated in Novi Sad on Tuesday to protest the negligence and corruption of the government, which they blamed for the accident. Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Serbian Transport Minister Goran Vesic resigned on Monday following the incident.
