Oath ceremony to be held in Ludhiana, participation of more than 10 thousand sarpanches expected
Aaj Samaj, Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will administer oath to the newly elected sarpanches tomorrow, Friday, during a state-level function at Cycle Valley in Dhanansoo village, Ludhiana. This unique event of the state government will further strengthen democracy at the grassroots level as Panchayats are considered the pillars of democracy.

During the state-level ceremony, the Chief Minister will administer oath to 10,031 sarpanches of 19 districts of the 13,147 gram panchayats of 23 districts elected in the recently concluded panchayat elections. Sarpanches of the remaining four districts, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Barnala and Gurdaspur, and 81,808 newly elected panches of 23 districts will take oath after the by-elections to Gidderbaha, Chabbewal, Barnala and Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituencies .
The government had taken many measures for fair elections.
The Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has set new standards in conducting Panchayat elections in a fair and transparent manner and these elections were held without the symbols of political parties, in order to keep the villages away from political factionalism and promote mutual brotherhood. In public interest, the state government had taken the historic decision to ban the party’s election symbol from participating in the Panchayat elections. Its objective was to put an end to the divisions arising from factionalism in the villages in order to ensure the comprehensive development of rural areas. With this noble step, the government has made special efforts to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system, which will further encourage the development of villages.
Many Panchayats elected unanimously
Taking another important step during the Panchayat elections, the Chief Minister appealed to the people of the state to overcome factionalism and elect the Panchayat unanimously so that brotherhood in the villages can be strengthened and a comprehensive development. This call of the Chief Minister received wide support, as a result of which 3,037 sarpanches of the state were elected unanimously. Of these, maximum 336 sarpanches were unanimously selected in Firozpur district, 335 sarpanches in Gurdaspur and 334 sarpanches in Tarn Taran.
