Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke about the situation in Manipur.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressed deep concern over the recent violent clashes and ongoing violence in Manipur. He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and take concrete steps to establish peace in the state.

Rahul Gandhi said in a post on ‘X’: “The recent violent incidents and continued violence in Manipur are extremely disturbing. It is a matter of concern for the state and the country.” He said the violence that has been going on between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur for over a year has not only affected thousands of families but is also weakening the social fabric of the entire state.

“The situation is continually getting worse”

He said, “After more than a year of division and suffering, all Indians hoped that the central and state governments would make all possible efforts for reconciliation and a solution would be found, but the situation continues to deteriorate.” Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “I request the Prime Minister to once again visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and harmony in the region.”

Attack on the residences of 3 ministers and 6 MLAs

Amid the ongoing violence in Manipur, the situation once again turned tense as protesters attacked the residences of three ministers and six MPs of the state on Saturday. The news came a day after the bodies of three of the six missing people who were recently pulled from a river in Manipur were found. Following the attack, the state government imposed an indefinite ban in five districts and also suspended internet services in some areas.

Conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities

The violence is part of the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur since May 2023, in which more than 200 people have lost their lives so far. The violence has also increased social and cultural tensions in the state and many families have been displaced. Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the backdrop of this violence, saying that the Central Government now needs to take active steps to resolve this crisis so that peace can be restored in Manipur and stability can be returned to the state.
