Tamilnadu Time, (present society), Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has today issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain in many districts including Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai. The yellow alert continues in Chennai. According to the IMD advisory, the depression formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal has turned into a deep depression and is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’ on Wednesday.
The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in districts such as Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet and Cuddalore. In response, authorities have declared holidays for schools in areas like Chennai, Chengalpet, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai, PTI reported. Schools and colleges in other areas including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur will remain closed from Tuesday due to the severe weather expected to affect these districts. The meteorological department has forecast widespread light to moderate rain across the region, with isolated heavy rain continuing until Thursday, November 28. The IMD has issued special alerts for parts of Tamil Nadu. Red alert was declared for extremely heavy rain in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai on Wednesday.
