The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition related to Delhi University on Monday, issued notice to the Central Government, Delhi Government and other parties. The petition alleged that the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee were not being followed in student union elections held across the country, including in Delhi University.
The Supreme Court had in an earlier order directed that the instructions of the Lyngdoh Committee be followed in the student union elections to be held across the country. The petition said that the interested parties had not followed the court’s instructions. The court has ordered these parties to submit their response within four weeks.
What are the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee?
The Lyngdoh Committee had issued some recommendations for the student union elections to be held in the country’s universities, which aimed to prevent the influence of muscle power and money and conduct the electoral process smoothly. As per the recommendations, a student can only participate in the elections once and a maximum of Rs 5,000 can be spent on the elections.
Candidates and their organizations will be prohibited from accepting electoral donations. During the elections, the placement of posters, advertisements and banners in public places will be completely prohibited. There will also be a prohibition on bringing any type of weapon onto the university campus. If the rules are violated, the candidate will be suspended for two years and will also be barred from appearing for that year’s exam.

Today the results of the Delhi University Students’ Union elections have been announced. In the elections, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) won two seats each. NSUI got the post of president after seven years. For the post of president, NSUI’s Raunak Khatri got a total of 20,207 votes, while his opponent, ABVP candidate, got 18,864 votes.
