Houston: In support of US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to expel immigrants from the country, Texas has offered to use 1,400 acres of farmland owned by the state government near the US-Mexico border. Texas Land Commissioner Don Buckingham, in a letter to Trump, asked for help in cooperation with federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He offered the property in Starr County to be used as a place for the arrest and detention of “violent criminals” before their deportation.

Buckingham criticized his predecessor for opposing construction of the wall on farmland, saying the move encouraged violence between criminal gangs and the exploitation of immigrants. Texas acquired the land last month to bolster border security efforts, including plans for a wall.

Trump has made his intentions clear

Trump has made known his intentions to declare a national emergency related to immigration. The move has raised concerns among supporters about the humanitarian and logistical implications of expelling millions of people from the country. While Texas supported Trump’s immigration policies, anger against this decision is growing in other states. Along with Buckingham’s endorsement, Los Angeles passed an ordinance to protect immigrants and limit local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. (Language)
