The Lok Sabha on Thursday (October 28) approved the extension of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill. Permission was given to submit the report on the bill until the last day of the 2025 budget session. Let us tell you that JPC chief Jagadambika Pal, demanding more time, moved a proposal to extend the term in the Lok Sabha, which was approved. After this the House debates were suspended.

According to information received, Parliament has agreed to extend the mandate of the Joint Parliamentary Committee that is evaluating the Waqf Bill. The deadline to submit its report was initially set for November 29, 2023, during the winter session. This deadline has now been extended until the last day of the 2025 budget session. This extension has been made in view of the ongoing discussions within the Committee and the need for more time to fully consider the implications of the bill.

On the other hand, amidst the uproar from the opposition parties, after the resolution regarding extension of the mandate of the JPC on the Waqf Bill was passed, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the behavior of the opposition. Further, Kiren Rijiju said that all opposition leaders and members of the Business Advisory Committee had set the deadline for the upcoming bills. We had also requested that adequate time be given to discuss the upcoming bills.
