Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar
Mahavikas Aghadi currency did not work in Maharashtra. He had to face defeat in the assembly elections. Only 47 seats reached his tally. The effect of this defeat will also be visible in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. There is a crisis when three big alliance leaders again reach Rajya Sabha.
Veteran MVA leaders Sharad Pawar, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Raut have suffered the biggest blow from this defeat. These are the three leaders who have clouds of trouble hanging over them if they come to Rajya Sabha again. Although Sharad Pawar has already said that this will be his last term in Rajya Sabha. His and Priyanka Chaturvedi’s term will end on April 3, 2026. Whereas, Sanjay Raut’s term will end on July 22, 2028.
Understand the Rajya Sabha numbers game
Mahayuti recorded a landslide victory in the assembly elections. His vote percentage was 49.6 percent. At the same time, the MVA’s voting percentage is 35.3 percent. After the historic victory of the BJP-led alliance, its position in Rajya Sabha will become stronger.
There are 19 Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Currently, BJP has 7, Congress has 3, Shiv Sena has 1, Shiv Sena (UBT) has 2, NCP has 3, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) has 2 and RPI has 1 MP.
The BJP has 95 MPs in Rajya Sabha. Including associates this figure reaches 112. After Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra has the highest number of Rajya Sabha seats.
Who gets how many votes?
If every MLA votes, the Congress will get 16 votes. Uddav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena will get 20 votes and Sharad Pawar’s NCP will get 10 votes. SP will get 2 votes and CPI-M will get 1 vote. If we talk about the total votes of the MVA, it will be 50. At the same time, Mahayuti has 235 MLAs in the Assembly, after which he gets 235 votes in Rajya Sabha.
According to the Election Commission, how many votes does a candidate need to become a Rajya Sabha MP?
What is the formula? Total Assembly votes/ (Rajya Sabha seats in state plus 1) plus 1
According to this formula, a candidate will need 15 votes.
This means Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) will be able to send MPs to Rajya Sabha in MVA. MVA can send a total of 3 MPs to Rajya Sabha. It currently has 7 deputies in the upper house. Imran Pratapgarhi, Chandrakant Handkore and Rajini Patel are from the Congress, while Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Raut are from Uddav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. While Sharad Pawar and Fauzia Khan are from NCP (Sharad faction).
If Shiv Sena, which has 20 MLAs, sends Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Raut to Rajya Sabha again, then it will need the support of the NCP (Sharad faction) and the SP along with the Congress.
