The Indian Coast Guard has seized 5,500 kg of drugs in the sea near Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This shipment of drugs has been seized on a Myanmar fishing boat. The name of this ship is “So Wei Yan Hu”. The Coast Guard also seized an Inmarsat portable satellite phone along with the banned drug methamphetamine. Rohingya boats and several hunters from Myanmar have been seen in the Andaman Sea in recent days. Some of them have also been captured. During the joint interrogation of the captured poachers many revelations were made, after which the Andaman Sea was kept under strict surveillance and now the largest consignment of drugs has been captured.
During surveillance, Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard spotted a ship that looked suspicious. This was reported to the Joint Operations Center (JOC), which asked the ICG fast patrol vessel, ICG ship Aruna Asaf Ali of Sri Vijaya Puram, to intercept the suspect vessel. The ICG ship proceeded at high speed to intercept the suspect ship despite poor sea conditions.
They find 5,500 kg of drugs on the boat
The ICG boat intercepted a fishing boat that did not match the local Indian boat. The ship was flying the Myanmar flag, so it was under surveillance until the morning of November 24. ICG ship Aruna Asaf Ali boarded the suspect ship at 6:30 am on November 24 for joint investigation and interrogation. At that time the ship was 8 nautical miles from Barren Island in Indian waters. The six crew members aboard the ship were identified as Myanmar nationals. During the search of the ship, the boarding party seized approximately 5,500 kg of a white crystalline substance along with a portable Inmarsat satellite phone.
The ship returned on November 25.
ICG ship Aruna Asaf Ali and the captured ship reached Sri Vijayapuram at 5 am on 25 Nov 24. This operation marks a great success in the fight against illegal drug trafficking and poaching in Indian waters. It is the largest consignment of drugs ever seized by the Indian Coast Guard. It is clear from this incident that international maritime drug trafficking is growing and posing new challenges. At the same time, the Indian Coast Guard is committed to border security and combating illegal drug trafficking.
