4pm News Network: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is making headlines for its minority status. The Supreme Court delivered its verdict on AMU’s minority status on Friday (November 8). The seven-judge court issued its verdict by a 4-3 majority. The Supreme Court has upheld AMU’s minority status.
Let us tell you that Aligarh Muslim University, which was earlier known as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. A Central University established in 1920, it has been recognized as an institution of national importance by the Government of India. According to MDRA’s Best Universities Survey 2022, Aligarh Muslim University was ranked fourth. AMU also ranked first in the country for offering maximum number of PG courses. Apart from this, the university is accredited by UGC, NAAC and AIU. The number of students who enter this university is very large and they have the opportunity to study in different careers.
The number of foreign students at the UMA increases
- Let us tell you that AMU is an international level university, which especially attracts students from Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia.
- Places on some courses have been reserved for foreign students at the university. There are currently approximately 39,367 students, including many foreign students.

- AMU has started 31 new online courses since session 2024-25.
- These courses have been designed keeping in mind the needs of students across the country.
- Of these 31 courses, 28 are 12 weeks long, while the remaining three courses are short-term courses lasting only eight weeks.
- These include business tourism, data science using Python, database management system, fundamentals of geology, environmental studies, Hindi language understanding, international relations and theater studies, etc.
