The famous South Korean electronics company LG has managed to manufacture the world’s first extendable screen, which can expand up to 50 percent. This is the highest expansion rate in the display industry.

Recently, at LG Science Park in Seoul, the company previewed the panel at a meeting of more than 100 South Korean industry, academic and research stakeholders involved in the National Stretchable Display Project. Extendable screens are the latest free form screens technology They are considered flexible because they can be manipulated into any shape, including stretching, bending, and twisting.

How much will the screen stretch?

The new prototype has a 12-inch display that expands to 18 inches, while offering 100 ppi (pixels per inch) and full red, green, and blue (RGB) colors. Compared to the first stretchable display prototype unveiled in 2022, the maximum expansion rate of the new panel has more than doubled, from 20 percent to 50 percent. That means you can stretch the screen up to 50 percent.

This increased stretchability opens up possibilities for different screen designs. This may increase competition in display technology at the time of commercialization.

LG Display worked hard to improve the stretchability and flexibility of the screen. This includes improving the properties of a specific silicone material substrate used in contact lenses and developing new wiring design infrastructure. This improvement exceeds the original target of 20 percent of the National Project section.

Apart from this, a micro-LED light source of up to 40 μm (micrometer) has been used. This gave great durability to the extendable screen prototype. Through this, you can repeatedly draw this screen more than 10,000 times, which is able to withstand low or high temperatures.
