Japan wants to know if a wooden satellite can survive in space or not. If it survives, in the future it will be easy for humans to build houses on planets like the Moon and Mars with the help of wood. Because wood is lighter than any other metal. It is renewable.

Japanese astronaut Takao Doi said that if Lignosat can tolerate radiation from the International Space Station and space, it will be of great help in the future. Professor Koji Murata, a forestry scientist at Kyoto University, said airplanes in the early 20th century were made solely of wood. That is why it is possible to make a wooden satellite. Wood will last longer in the space. Because there is no water, air, oxygen or fire in space to burn it or decompose it.

This satellite was made from the wood of a tree called Honoki. This is a Magnolia species tree. This is a ten month experiment. This satellite will remain on the space station for ten months. After this it will be launched into space. It will then continue to orbit for six months. During this time its electronic components will be turned on and their operation will be observed. A temperature of -100 to 100 degrees Celsius will be tested. The status of this satellite will be checked every 45 minutes.
