Bill passed in the Australian House of Representatives
With children’s health in mind, Australia’s House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a major bill under which children under the age of 16 will be banned from accessing social media platforms. Now, the task of finalizing this bill has been left to the Senate.
This bill has been supported by all major parties. Under this, platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram can be fined up to 50 million Australian dollars (about 33 million US dollars) for failing to prevent children from creating accounts. This bill has been approved with 102 votes in favor and 13 votes against. If the bill becomes law this week, social media platforms will have a year to properly enforce age restrictions for children before sanctions are implemented.
Opposition MP Dan Tehan told parliament that the government had agreed to accept the amendments in the Senate. Privacy protections will be strengthened in these amendments. According to this, platforms will not be able to request government identity documents such as a passport or driver’s license from users, nor will they be able to request digital identity through the government system.
