The Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination-2025 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for appointment of officers to various posts in the Central Services will now be held on June 8. According to news agency PTI, this decision of the Commission came after the government’s recent decision, in which the recruitment of Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) officers was ordered to be done through an examination of civil services and an engineering services examination (ESE). Under this new scheme, officers of various sub-cadres of IRMS will now be selected through both the exams. Recruitment for the Traffic, Accounting and Personnel sub-cadre will be done through Civil Services Examination, while selection for the Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signals and Telecommunications and Warehouses sub-cadre will be done through ESE.

An integrated recruitment process will be adopted for appointment of various posts in Railways.

The Ministry of Railways notified the Indian Railway Management Service (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on October 9, 2024, making it clear that a unified recruitment process will be adopted for appointment to various posts in the Indian Railways. India. In 2019, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to merge eight Group ‘A’ railway services into one central service – the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). These eight services included the Indian Railway Traffic Service, the Indian Railways Accounts Service, the Indian Railways Personnel Service, the Indian Railway Engineering Service, the Indian Railways Warehouse Service, the Indian Railways Mechanical Engineering Service, Indian Railways Electrical Engineering Service and Indian Railway Signal Engineering Service.

According to UPSC, officials of IRMS (Civil), IRMS (Storage), IRMS (Mechanical), IRMS (Electrical) and IRMS (Signal and Telecommunications) sub-cadres will be selected until ESE 2025. This change will give more options to competitive examination candidates in the direction of your career and will guarantee integrated and efficient management of railway services.
