Why is Utpanna Ekadashi celebrated?
According to Padma Purana, once Yudhishthir asked Lord Krishna about the origin of the date of Ekadashi. Lord Krishna said that once in Satyayuga, a demon named Mur defeated Devraj Indra and established his rule over the sky. After this, all the gods went to Mahadev ji. Mahadev ji came to Kshirsagar Lord Vishnu with the gods. Seeing Lord Vishnu absorbed in yoga nidra on the bed of Sheshnag, the gods praised him. After which Lord Vishnu attacked Mur at the request of the gods. After killing many demons during the war, Lord Vishnu went to Badarika Ashram. There he fell asleep in a cave twelve yojanas long. Following them, the Mur demon also arrived at the cave. As soon as the peacock entered the cave, a girl armed with weapons was born from the body of Lord Vishnu. That girl destroyed the peacock just with her roar. Lord Vishnu was pleased with the girl. The girl’s name was Ekadashi. The date of his birth is called Utpana Ekadashi.
