More than a year has passed since the violent clashes in Manipur, but the situation in the country’s eastern state is yet to return to normal. Violence breaks out from time to time. The latest case is that after the kidnapping of 6 people, their bodies were found, after which curfew must be imposed again in the state. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday termed the recent violent clashes in Manipur as disturbing and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and work towards restoring peace in the region.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X: ‘The recent violent clashes and continued bloodshed in Manipur have shocked the country. There has been an atmosphere of division and suffering in the state for more than a year. The hope of all Indians was that the central and state governments would make every effort to establish harmony and find a solution. Once again, an appeal is made to the Prime Minister to visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and harmony in the region. In this difficult time, people need support.

Caste violence began in Manipur on May 3, 2023 and shows no signs of stopping. On November 12, armed militants attacked the Borobekra police station in Jiribam district. There is a CRPF camp in this police station and there is also a relief camp nearby. In retaliation, the CRPF killed 11 militants. A CRPF jawan was also shot.

On November 11, a group of militants attacked a police station in Borobekara area, but security forces repelled the attack, resulting in the death of 11 militants. While retreating, the militants allegedly abducted three women and three children from a relief camp near the police station. Sources said their bodies were found near a river in remote Jirimukh village in Jiribam district on the Manipur-Assam border on Friday night. The bodies were brought to Silchar Medical College Hospital in Assam on Friday night and kept in the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy. Protests have begun in the valley districts against the murder of 6 people, whose bodies were found in Jiribam.

In view of the current situation in the northeastern state, internet has been shut down for two days in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts. Large-scale violence was reported in parts of the Imphal Valley, as mobs broke into the houses of several MLAs and destroyed properties.
