The Supreme Court has given its supreme verdict on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University. The court has upheld AMU’s minority status in its decision. Delivering the verdict, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said it was a unanimous opinion of four judges. While 3 judges have different opinions. The court also said the minority status will now be decided by a new three-judge court.

The Supreme Court, with a 4-3 majority, rejected the 1967 decision that had become the basis for denying minority status to AMU. The 1967 decision said that the AMU could not be considered a minority institution because it was created by a central law. Now the 1967 decision has been overturned by the Supreme Court. However, a new 3-judge tribunal will be formed which will decide the minority status of the university based on the terms and conditions.

On this occasion people are celebrating at the university and sweets are distributed and people also hug and congratulate each other. In the meantime, said a university employee, the decision was eagerly awaited and we are very happy with it. At the same time, another person said, we have received a lot of joy from the Supreme Court. Today is a very happy day for AMU.

The Teachers Association welcomed the decision

This decision was welcomed by the Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA). The Teachers’ Association said that we highly welcome the decision of the Supreme Court, in which the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University has been confirmed. This historic decision reaffirms the character of the University in the sense that it accepts its objective of providing comprehensive education to the Muslim community including all sectors of the society.

The Teachers’ Association said we expect a resolution soon in the minority case in accordance with the rules established by the constitutional chamber of the Supreme Court. We have full faith in the judiciary and the constitution of our country.
