Harihar is made up of two words. Hari means Lord Vishnu and Har means Shiva.
Violence broke out with the attack on the team that had gone to inspect Jama Masjid in Sambhal. This survey was ordered after a petition was filed in Sambhal district court, which said that Jama Masjid had been built on the site of the ancient Shri Harihar temple. It has also been claimed that Babar destroyed the Harihar temple. During the Mughal period, the temple here was forcibly converted into a mosque.
The petitioners have also told the court that currently Jama Masjid is a protected monument. Let us know who is Lord Harihar. Why was he incarnated and where are his temples?
Harihar means Vishnu and Shiva.
Harihar is made up of two words. Hari means Lord Vishnu and Har means Shiva. According to historical and mythological stories, Harihar is that form of God in which Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are seen half in one body. Lord Harihar’s form is actually a form of Lord Shiva, in which he is seen in his half form with Lord Vishnu.
Brahma and Vishnu asked for blessings
There are different mythological stories about the form of Lord Harihar. There is a story that once Lord Brahma and Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva. Shivshankar was happy and asked them both to ask for a blessing. Given this, Brahma, the creator of the universe, asked for a blessing from Lord Shiva to become his son. Shivji said that he will fulfill Brahmaji’s wish when he does not succeed during the creation of the universe and becomes angry. Then from that anger Shiva will be born and will be called the eleventh Rudra.
At the same time, Lord Vishnu asked for devotion to Lord Shiva as a blessing. Pleased with this, Lord Shiva accepted Vishnu as half of his body. From then on he began to be worshiped in the form of Harihar. It is said in the scriptures that Lord Harihar has the marks of Rudra on his right side and Vishnu on his left side. Lord Harihar holds a spike in his right hand and a disc, mace and chakra in his left hand. Gauri sits on his right and Lakshmi on his left.
Unification of Shiva and Vishnu
Overall, Lord Harihar is the integration of Shiva and Vishnu, who are worshiped for their different qualities. On one hand, Lord Bholenath is the god of destruction, while on the other hand, Vishnu is the sustainer of creation. Still, both are present together in the form of Harihar. That means that both destruction and protection are necessary for creation.
Dispute between Shaiva and Vaishnav resolved.
There is also a historical story that once there was a dispute between the Shaiva people who worship Lord Shiva and the Vaisnav people who worship Lord Vishnu over who is the superior God. The Shaiva people called Lord Shiva superior and the Vaisnavas called Lord Vishnu superior. People from both sides contacted Shivshankar regarding this dispute. He considered that this type of controversy should not occur. He therefore assumed the form of Harihar, who was half Vishnu and half Shiva. This made the devotees understand that there is no dispute between these two superpowers. Therefore there should not be any dispute between them.
This is how the Harihar area was formed
There is also a story that in ancient times there was a conflict situation in the society due to a dispute between Shaiva and Vaisnava. Therefore, the enlightened ones of both sects held a conference at one place and reached an agreement. Hari and Har were jointly settled in the same place, which was called Harihar Kshetra. Today this place is situated in Sonpur, Bihar, where the largest animal fair is held. Harihar temple is established here.
There is also a temple of Lord Harihar in Giridih, Jharkhand which is known as Harihar Dham. Harihar Dham is located just a kilometer from GT Road in Bagodar in the southwest, at a distance of about 60 km from the district headquarters of Giridih. The world’s tallest Shivalinga, measuring 20 feet, is installed here.
