The Indian Army will soon receive the local Zoravar light tank. Its final trials began in Ladakh on Thursday. It had previously been tested successfully in plains and desert areas. If this test is also successful, the Zorawar tank will be inducted into the army next year.
The final trials of Zorawar will be carried out in the high altitude areas of Ladakh between November 21 and December 15. It was earlier tested in the desert areas and plains of Rajasthan where it met the army’s expectations. After successful tests, it will be delivered to the army in 2025.
ready to compete with china
The need for the Zorawar tank was felt after the Galwan violence, when China deployed its ZTQ-15 Black Panther light combat tank on the Ladakh border. The army demanded light tanks, after which the Zorawar tank was prepared after 4 years. This tank is jointly built by DRDO and L&T.
Zorawar Tank Features
This tank is fast and equipped with modern weapons such as laser, machine gun and anti-tank guided missiles. It weighs 25 tons, almost half that of other tanks. It is equipped with a powerful 105 mm cannon and can only be operated by three soldiers.
Prepared according to the needs of the army.
The Zorawar tank has been designed to the standards of firepower, mobility and protection. Being light, it can be deployed in high altitude areas by aircraft. Currently the army has declared the need for 359 light tanks, but only 59 Zorawar tanks have been ordered so far. These tanks will replace the army’s aging T-72 tanks.
Named after the conqueror of Ladakh.
The Zorawar tank is named after General Zorawar Singh Kahluria. General Jorwar Singh had conquered Ladakh, Tibet and Gilgit Balistan during the Dogra rule. He also served as governor of Kishtwar.
