November 1: when an attempt was made to kill the president of the United States, the attackers of this country were captured – attempted assassination of harry truman 1950 tedu1

On this day, i.e. November 1, 1950, an attempt was made to assassinate Truman by the President of the United States, Harry S. The attackers, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo, assassinated President Harry S. Truman at Blair House in Washington, DC. He attempted to assassinate Truman, but Truman escaped.

During the winter of 1950, the White House was being renovated and President Truman and his family lived in the Blair House on Pennsylvania Avenue. On the afternoon of November 1, Truman and his wife were upstairs when they heard noises and gunshots coming from the front steps of the house.

The assassins had arrived at the door of the president’s house.
There two alleged murderers had arrived at the main door of the house and began shooting. However, due to the quick response of police officers and guards, they were unable to continue up the entrance stairs. Secret Service agent Leslie Coffelt was seriously injured in the deadly melee before one of the attackers could kill Torresola.

The murderers were residents of Puerto Rico.
Collazo, the second attacker, later told police how poorly planned the assassination attempt was. The attackers were not sure if Truman would be home when they attacked at 2 p.m. Torresola and Collazo were political activists and members of the extremist Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, a group that fought for Puerto Rico’s full independence from the United States.

Seemingly tormented by the attack on his life, Truman dryly stated that these are the things a president should expect. Oscar Collazo was sentenced to death, but pardoned on July 24, 1952. Truman commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
