flash flood

Many areas have been destroyed by flash floods around the city of Valencia in the eastern part of Spain. It has been described as one of the worst natural disasters in Spain’s recent history. According to reports, a year’s worth of rain fell in just 8 hours. Although it is common for rain in autumn, the sudden flood surprised many people.

Thousands of people live without electricity or water in Valencia and its surroundings. More than 1,000 military personnel have been deployed to assist in rescue efforts. Train traffic was suspended and schools and museums were closed.

The Spanish branch of Caritas, the international Catholic charity, is working with local humanitarian organizations and religious dioceses to help the displaced. Measures are being taken in public buildings for the homeless.

The President of the Government of Spain has officially declared three days of mourning starting October 31.
