India will become the biggest supporter of Maldives, can it survive with 875 crores?

The president of Maldives, Mohammed Muizzu.

Recently, relations between Maldives and India had gone through a sour patch, but now there has been a rise in hope that they will return to their sweet path. This was also confirmed when Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu recently visited India. Now the Maldives hopes that, as always, India will become its biggest supporter next year and receive an aid of Rs 875 million (about Rs 1.6 billion from the Maldives).

In fact, Maldives receives a large amount of aid from its foreign friendly countries every year. In such a situation, the Maldives government estimates that India will give it a grant of Rs 875 million in 2025. This is 72 per cent of the total foreign aid it receives from friendly countries.

This was said in the Maldives budget.

As reported by news website ‘Aadhadhoo.com’, the budget was presented in the Maldives Parliament on Thursday. This estimate has been made for foreign aid in the Maldives budget for 2025. Under the budget proposal for 2025, the administration led by President Mohamed Muizzu has estimated a total of 2.25 billion Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) in international subsidies.

In this case, there is a possibility of receiving 72 percent of India’s foreign aid. It is about MVR 1.6 billion (around 875 million Indian rupees).

So much money can come from China

Maldives also receives significant aid from China. Therefore, in 2025 it will be able to receive 502 million MVR from China. This is about 22 percent of the foreign aid it receives. Apart from this, the Maldives government is also expected to receive grants from other friendly countries like Japan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands.

According to the report, India has provided “substantial” financial assistance to the Maldives this year. Last month, during President Mohammad Muizzu’s visit to India, India had announced an aid of $400 million (around Rs 3.36 billion).

The current president of the Maldives, Mohammed Muizzu, is considered very close to China. A major part of his election campaign was “anti-India”. Therefore, due to his initial attitude, relations between Maldives and India seemed to have deteriorated slightly.
