17 years ago, when a film released on the occasion of Diwali became the highest grossing film of the year, it was Shahrukh Khan’s film. The year was 2007 and the film was Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’. Since then, Bollywood has never had its highest-grossing film on Diwali.
This relationship of Diwali’s explosive success with Shahrukh is actually more than 30 years old. Theaters saw the combination of Diwali with Shahrukh for the first time in 1993. Then ‘Baazigar’, one of the most iconic hits of Shahrukh’s career, was released in theatres. This film remains one of the biggest hits released on Diwali. ‘Baazigar’ was the fourth highest grossing film of the year.
Diwali 1995 brought that film to Bollywood, making audiences crazy about Shahrukh forever. His iconic love story ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ with Kajol released in theaters and became an all-time box office hit. In 2004, Yash Chopra’s iconic love story ‘Veer Zara’ released on Diwali. Shahrukh and Preity Zinta’s love story created such magic in the audience that it remains the same even today. Even today, when ‘Veer Zara’ releases in theatres, it receives the same love from the audience. And the box office once again saw the magic of Shahrukh’s Diwali influence in 2007 in ‘Om Shanti Om’.
