There is a huge stir in Madhya Pradesh over the death of 10 elephants. Meanwhile, an elephant also died in Chhattisgarh, adjacent to Madhya Pradesh. Bilaspur Forest Division officials said an elephant cub died allegedly due to electrocution in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district. Officials said this incident took place in Tingipur area of Takhatpur forest range, adjacent to Achanakmar Tiger Reserve.
Manoj Pandey, regional director of Achanakmar Tiger Reserve located in Lormi area of Mungeli district, said the STPF (Special Tiger Protection Force) team had discovered the tiger near Parsapara village in the Tingipur area in Takhatpur forest division of Bilaspur district, about one kilometer from this area the carcass of an elephant cub was recovered.
The body is two days old.
Manoj Pandey said that after receiving information about the incident, a team of forest officials from Bilaspur and Mungeli Forest Division, Forest Development Corporation and ATR reached the spot. He said the body of a male puppy about four years old is about two days old. The official said the elephant cub had burns and wound marks on its neck and paws. It is suspected that the cub died after getting entangled in electrical cables laid for hunting purposes. Pandey said the elephant cub might have died on the night of October 30.
Elephant tangled in hunters wire
After inspecting the area around the place, no electrical wires were found anywhere, but there were definitely pig tracks there. The hunters probably laid a wire to hunt the wild boars and the elephant cub was under their control. The forest official said that two days ago a group of elephants were roaming in this area. This group included four elephants and a cub. The puppy in that group is feared to have been electrocuted. Pandey said the Forest Department team has started investigating the matter. A team of doctors is conducting an autopsy on the body. More information about the cause of death will be available only after the post-mortem report arrives. (PTI input-language)
