Recently, after 10 years, assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in which the National Conference and Congress won and Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister for the second time. Elections were held for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir after the removal of Article 370. After this, the election of the Speaker of the first Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was held, where the leader of the National Conference , Abdul Rahim Rather, unanimously became Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday.
As soon as the House debates began at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Similarly, Rather, 78, who was a minister in the cabinets of Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, was elected president after Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Javed Ahmed. Rather, he presented a proposal to elect him for this prestigious position. This proposal was also supported by Ramban MLA Arjun Singh Raju of the National Conference.

When the opposition parties decided not to run for office, interim president Mubarak Gul announced his election as president. Abdul Rahim Rather has been elected from Charari Sharif seat in Budgam district seven consecutive times and has been an MLA.

Abdul Rahim has been associated with the National Conference for a long time. He has also been Minister of Finance of the state. Abdul Rahim is among the senior leaders of the National Conference. This is the first session of the assembly after Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory, of which Abdul Rahim has become the first speaker.
