Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has constituted the fourth State Finance Commission (SFC) and handed over its charge to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yamal Vyas. The state government gave this information in a notification issued on Monday. The fourth SFC of Gujarat has been constituted after a gap of about nine years. The term of the third State Finance Commission constituted under the chairmanship of Bharat Gariwala ended in 2015.

Vyas, who has been appointed as the chairman of the fourth State Finance Commission, is the chief spokesperson of the ruling BJP in Gujarat. He is a chartered accountant and company secretary by profession and has almost four decades of experience in this field. He was also a full-time member of the 3rd SFC between 2011 and 2015. He has also served as an independent director on the boards of various state-owned public companies. The notification issued by Gujarat Chief Secretary Raj Kumar provides information on the formation of the fourth State Finance Commission under the leadership of Yamalbhai Vyas.
The members of the 16th Finance Commission had visited Gujarat.
The 16th Finance Commission constituted under the chairmanship of Arvind Panagariya visited Gujarat last month. At that time, the state government had demanded to increase the share of states in the ‘tax division section’ from 41 per cent to 50 per cent. An opposition Congress delegation raised the issue of delay in formation of the State Finance Commission in its meeting with the Central Finance Commission. The Congress had said that Gujarat should now appoint the seventh State Finance Commission. (with language inputs)
