Now DGP will be selected only in UP, panel will not be sent to UPSC

The UP Cabinet has taken an important decision regarding the selection of the Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh. Now the rules for DGP selection will be decided in UP itself and will not be sent to UPSC. The Cabinet has also taken a new decision on the tenure of the UP DGP, according to which now the tenure of the DGP will be two years.

Pursuant to this decision, the UP government approved the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Selection Guidelines 2024. Now the DGP will be selected by a special committee, which will be constituted under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge . This committee will also include the Chief Secretary, a UPSC candidate, Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) or his designated representative, Additional Chief Secretary/Principal Home Secretary and a retired DGP.

The special thing is that the person selected for DGP must have at least six months of service left. Once selected, the DGP will have a fixed duration of two years.

There is also talk that the UP government is preparing to make Prashant Kumar the full-time DGP. He is likely to get a fixed two-year term. Since late in the night, there has been speculation regarding this decision that perhaps the cabinet proposal to make Prashant Kumar the permanent DGP has been put forward.

This decision can be seen as a change in the Supreme Court’s order, and there are discussions among legal experts about this measure.
