Punjab Assembly Bypoll 2024: After date change, political parties intensified campaign

Interesting contest for Dera Baba Nanak seat in Assembly by-elections

This election also became a credibility issue for MP Randhawa after his wife entered the electoral field.

Punjab Assembly Bypoll 2024 (Rohit Rohila), Chandigarh. The date of by-elections to four assembly seats in Punjab may have changed, but there is an interesting contest between political parties in some seats. The contest for these four seats is seen to be primarily between the Congress, AAP and BJP. In such a situation, these political parties have intensified their election campaign. Among them, the contest over the Dera Baba Nanak seat is also interesting. 14 elections have been held here from 1951 to 2022, of which the Congress has hoisted its flag 9 times. Similarly, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has been winning from here on the Congress ticket in the last three elections.

Now the Congress has fielded his wife in the elections. This seat fell vacant only after Sukhjinder Randhawa of Congress won the Gurdaspur seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Randhawa has won from Dera Baba Nanak in three consecutive elections from 2012 to 2022. Here his vote share and margin of victory may have narrowed, but in the last three elections he has managed to win this seat for the Congress.

While Sukhjinder Randhawa won the 2012 elections with 50.22 percent of the votes, in the year 2017 his vote percentage dropped to 42.83 percent. The AAP and the BJP will do everything possible to take advantage of this drop in vote percentage and this is also a matter of concern for the Congress.

SAD does not run in the elections

This time Shiromani Akali Dal was also left out of the race, so all three parties are keeping an eye on their vote bank. This time Congress has nominated Jatinder Kaur, wife of MP Sukhjinder Randhawa, so this election has also become a question of credibility for MP Randhawa. The BJP has fielded Ravikaran Kahlon, son of Akali leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon, from here. In the 2022 assembly elections, Kahlon lost to Sukhjinder Randhawa in the same seat by just 466 votes. He then participated in the elections on the Akali Dal ticket. Akali Dal will not contest the by-elections this time.

BJP may benefit

The BJP claims that it will benefit from this entire political equation here. However, due to the triangular contest, this election will not be so easy for any party. Similarly, the AAP has again given ticket from this seat to Gurdeep Randhawa, who had also contested the 2022 elections on the AAP ticket, but had lost. Then, Gurdeep Randhawa got 22.2 per cent of the votes. CM Bhagwant Mann himself has taken charge of his election campaign.

Randhawa takes charge of the election campaign

Congress’s own Sukhjinder Randhawa has taken charge of his wife Jatinder Kaur’s election campaign. While the BJP has also intensified its campaign in Dera Baba Nanak. The Election Commission of India has changed the date of elections regarding the by-elections for four seats in Punjab. As per the new order of the Election Commission of India, the polling date for the by-elections to Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Gidderbaha and Barnala seats has been fixed as November 20; Before, the elections were to be held on November 13. Apart from Chhath and Gurupurva, changes have been made in the by-election dates for other reasons. The results of the by-elections for the four seats will be announced on November 23.
