Delhi govt plans to open premium liquor shops

New Delhi: Keeping in mind the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Delhi government has taken a big decision. According to which there is a plan to open premium liquor stores before the New Year. An official gave this information on Tuesday.

What will these premium liquor stores be like?

These liquor stores will be quite large in size and ideally will be more than 500 square meters. Customers will have the chance to choose their favorite brand from the shelf. “We have asked four Delhi government corporations to open more premium stores. They are working on it,” said a senior excise department official.

We reported that after the increase in excise policy 2021-22 in August 2020 and private operators closed liquor shops in Delhi, four corporations are handling the entire liquor trade in the city. Those names are Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), Delhi Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores (DCCWS) and Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (DSCSC).

How many premium liquor stores are there in Delhi today?

The official said there are currently more than 45 premium stores in major shopping malls and malls in Delhi. In such a situation, the four corporations were instructed to open more premium stores and find suitable places to rent them.

According to the information received, new premium stores will be opened in Delhi in shopping malls and shopping complexes depending on the availability of rented space. Let us tell you that the four Delhi corporations together run around 700 liquor shops through small shops, where customers buy their brands at wooden counters.

The official also said that revenue earned through excise duty and value-added tax on alcoholic beverages has improved this year compared to the last financial year. Opening new premium stores will improve sales and revenue. We reported that in the first half of the current financial year, the Excise Department earned Rs 3,047 crore from tax on sale of liquor, while it earned Rs 2,849 crore in the same period last year.
