Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Wednesday hinted that the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee could be the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. Opposition parties reacted sharply to Ghosh’s statement and accused the ruling party of playing dynastic politics. On the eve of Abhishek’s birthday, Ghosh praised his contribution to the party and wished him good health, especially recovery from his eye-related problems.
Kunal Ghosh praised Abhishek Banerjee
Ghosh said in a Facebook post: “Abhishek Banerjee has shown his leadership skills at a very young age. “Whether I am still active in politics or not, I will keep a close eye on this rising star.” He wrote, “Abhishek may be young, but as long as I am active in TMC, he will be my leader. Beyond politics, I have love and respect for him. I have seen Mamata Banerjee lead for years, and now I see Abhishek emerging, becoming more mature with time, combining passion with modern methods and technology, honing his skills and improving further.” Ghosh said, “Abhishek will one day become the Chief Minister of West Bengal and take the Trinamool Congress into a new era. “He embodies the sentiments and legacy of Mamata Banerjee.”
‘TMC is a family business’
Abhishek is chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew. The BJP and Left parties heavily criticized Ghosh’s statement. BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “TMC is not a popular party; This is a family business. He is preparing to hand over the post of Chief Minister as his legacy.” The BJP claimed that the people of West Bengal are fed up with such dynastic tendencies and are looking for real representation.
The CPI(M) launched a scathing attack
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sujan Chakraborty accused the TMC of neglecting grassroots workers to give priority to family members. He said, “The TMC claims to be a party of the people, but it shows time and again that it wants to keep power concentrated in the hands of a single family. “This statement demoralizes thousands of loyal TMC workers who are fighting for the success of the party.” (with language inputs)
