Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election has worried Ukraine. In fact, Ukraine depends on foreign military aid – especially from the United States – in its nearly three-year war against Russia. During his election campaign, Trump repeatedly raised the issue that the Biden administration was spending American citizens’ tax money on helping other countries in war, rather than on them.
The AFP news agency spoke to the people of Ukraine about the results of the US presidential elections and tried to find out their opinion. Natalia Pichaki, who fled the city of Mariupol after the Russian military siege in 2022, said that after Trump becomes president, she believes military aid to Ukraine will be reduced. Pichaki said: “This is a matter of concern for us and we are very upset.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday congratulated Trump on his victory and said he hoped his presidency would bring peace to Ukraine. But looking back, Trump’s advisers have suggested that Ukraine hand over the disputed areas to Russia to end the war. Trump ally JD Vance will be the next vice president of the United States. Some time ago he said in a statement that he did not care about the fate of Ukraine. During the US presidential election, he repeatedly claimed that Trump could end the war in Ukraine.

Behind closed doors, some Ukrainian officials remain optimistic about the incoming US administration led by Donald Trump and have adopted a wait-and-see attitude. IT professional Tetiana Podleska said American support for Ukraine does not depend entirely on who is president. He said: “I don’t think it will change things completely.” However, he acknowledged that the Biden administration is unlikely to further help Ukraine in the war with Russia after Trump takes office.

Olga Prykhodko, a professor in kyiv, said the U.S. election results send a message that Ukraine will have to do more domestically to ensure victory in the war. He said: “Because our life, the future of our country is in our hands.” Igor Strygius, a 52-year-old resident of kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, said that Donald Trump became the next president of the United States: “This worries everyone.” This concerns the whole world, not just Ukraine. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
