Who is Chhathi Maiya?

It is believed that during these 6 days, Chhathi Maiya stays with the newborn child and showers her blessings on him. Chhathi Maiya is considered the goddess who protects children.

Mythological story related to Chhath Puja
According to legend, King Priyamvad was childless and then Maharishi Kashyap performed Putreshti Yagya. The king handed over the kheer prepared for the yagya offering to queen Malini. Due to this effect, they had a son, Ratna, but that child was stillborn. Priyamvad took his dead son’s body to the crematorium and, grieving over the loss of his son, he too began to lay down his life. Then Devasena, the mental daughter of God, appeared. He told Priyamvad that my name is Shashthi because I was born from the sixth part of the basic nature of the universe. Hey king! You adore me and inspire others too. The king, desiring to have a son, observed the fast of Goddess Shashthi with a sincere heart and was blessed with a son. This puja was performed on Kartik Shukla Shashthi. Since then, people observe Chhath Puja fast to have children.
