A truck driver from Kanpur and his assistant were on Thursday sentenced to 12 years in jail by a court in Tripura’s Sipahijala district for smuggling banned cough syrup. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Debashish Kar also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of them.

On June 4 last year, the police, acting on a tip-off, chased a UP-registered truck coming from Agartala and stopped it on the Bishalgarh bypass in Sipahijala district. According to the prosecution, 47,984 bottles of prohibited cough syrup were found in the truck during the search.

Government lawyer Gautam Giri informed a news agency in the matter that driver Ankuj Shukla and assistant Rajendra Singh were arrested. Both have been sentenced to 12 years in prison for supplying banned cough syrup.
